Frequently asked questions

Do I need a subscription to play?

No. Every song plays a 30-second Apple Music preview, with no account or subscription. If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can turn on full songs in the game's settings.

How many phones do we need?

One iPhone for the whole table, 2 to 6 players. It gets passed around, and lettered answers get called out across the room.

How do I put the game on the TV?

The TV shows the room screen — questions, choices, timelines — while the player keeps the phone in hand.

With AirPlay (Apple TV or a compatible TV)

  1. Put the iPhone and the TV on the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open Control Center: swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
  3. Tap Screen Mirroring (the icon of two overlapping rectangles).
  4. Pick your TV from the list. If a code appears on the TV, enter it on the iPhone.
  5. Open Needle Jam: the TV switches to the room screen, and the sound plays on the TV.

To stop: Control Center → Screen Mirroring → Stop Mirroring.

Without AirPlay

A plain USB-C to HDMI cable between the iPhone and the TV does the job. On an iPhone with a Lightning port, use Apple's Lightning to HDMI adapter.

Can we play with friends far away?

Yes, and it works really well. Start a FaceTime call, tap the screen-sharing button, then open Needle Jam: your friends see the game and hear the music, and everyone shouts their answer into the call.

The music doesn't play

Check that the iPhone is online and the volume is up: previews load when the song starts. The silent switch doesn't matter — the music plays in silent mode too.

A few songs have no preview available from Apple; the turn then carries on without music. With full songs on, if a song can't play in full, the game falls back to its preview.

The song title shows in Control Center

With full songs, iOS shows the title and cover in Control Center and on the Lock Screen — the game can't prevent it. The screen stays awake during a game to keep the Lock Screen away. To go further, turn on Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility): it blocks Control Center. The 30-second previews show nothing.

Can we play in French?

Yes. The language is chosen in the game's settings, independently of the iPhone's. The Québécois pack is French only.

When does the game come out?

Needle Jam is being tested at real parties right now. Join the beta to try it before it lands on the App Store.
